Hidden Consumption
This project introduces an innovative interactive prototype designed to transform the understanding of electricity consumption into a tangible and engaging experience. This project pioneers a hands-on approach to energy education, utilising colored and sized balls placed on individual plates to visually and physically represent electricity usage. Aimed at demystifying energy consumption through experiential learning, the project seeks to foster personal awareness, accountability, and a collective consciousness towards energy conservation in domestic environments.

Process
The development was guided by a user-centered design philosophy, emphasising the need for an intuitive and meaningful interaction with the concept of electricity usage. The initial challenge was to convey complex information about energy consumption in an accessible and relatable manner. Through iterative design and user testing, it became apparent that guidance on the significance of colors, quantity interpretation, and the provision of relevant contextual information was crucial to mitigate confusion and enhance the educational value of the prototype. Adjustments were made to refine the visual and tactile cues, ensuring they effectively communicated electricity usage metrics in a manner that encourages discussion, reflection, and a deeper understanding of individual and collective energy footprints.
Tools Used
This project involved a combination of physical and digital tools. Physical materials, such as colored balls of varying sizes and plates, were selected for their tactile qualities and the intuitive way they could represent different levels of electricity consumption. Digital tools were employed in the background to support the integration of this physical interface with real-time data and insights about energy usage, allowing for an interactive experience that bridges the gap between abstract energy units and their practical implications. Additionally, software for data visualisation and user interaction was developed to complement the physical setup, providing a seamless and informative experience that integrates effortlessly into domestic settings.
Boosting Energy Literacy in Everyday Life
The project stands as a unique contribution to the field of interactive design, offering a novel way to engage with the often overlooked topic of electricity consumption. By bringing energy discussions into the home through a tactile and visually compelling medium, the prototype makes the concept of energy conservation both accessible and personal. This project exemplifies the potential of interactive design to catalyse change, inviting users to reconsider their energy habits through a hands-on and thought-provoking experience. this project not only enhances understanding and awareness of electricity consumption but also lays the groundwork for more sustainable behaviours and practices in daily life.
